Digitization that transforms service delivery and drives improved customer outcomes

By Mark Sørheim - August 18, 2021

Over the past 12 months, HydraWell has witnessed an acceleration in planned well abandonment projects, many of which are in new hotspots around the world. This combined with a global focus on creating sustainable energy solutions has seen major Oil & Gas operators investing in energy projects bolstered by Governments and regulators backing this shift by providing supportive fiscal regimes to decommission aging assets more responsibly and cost effectively.

Despite taking huge strides towards implementing cleaner operations and embracing sustainability initiatives, there is still a real need and enthusiasm for newer and better ways of delivering well abandonment to strengthen time and cost efficiencies as well as help play a part in achieving Net Zero targets. Furthermore, there is a drive for improved solutions that clearly demonstrate the quality of the barriers installed.

To meet these changing needs for future P&A projects, innovation and a digital approach is key.

HydraWell has a strong track-record delivering significant cost reductions for the industry through its highly efficient and reliable PWC® systems. These have successfully delivered over 400 barriers in 14 countries with installation times as low as 24hrs – when compared to traditional techniques, this reduces operational time by as much as 80%.

As a team of innovators, we are continuously inventing solutions that offer more efficient well abandonment methods to new and existing clients around the world. HydraWell is committed to pioneering alternative approaches to P&A and one key initiative is a combination of our existing service portfolio with new digital solutions.

We believe that this combination can significantly contribute to savings and risk reduction when installing well barriers as well as supporting customers to achieve their sustainability ambitions by ensuring wells are responsibly abandoned in a safe, efficient and effective way.

Our portfolio of digital solutions is growing and as a trusted partner for over 20 major operators, we have developed an unparalleled understanding of the key workflows in the execution of our services. Working together, we are actively translating this understanding into digital processes to deliver solutions that enable cost reductions, improvements in quality and reductions in environmental waste.

The fundamental principle behind our digital transformation is to deliver better outcomes for our customers. These are generated in a three-step process:

  • Data Collection
  • Data Analytics
  • Data Driven Decision Making.

Data Collection is the mapping of workflows to gather the correct information at the right time to create an intelligent database we can interrogate.

Data Analytics gives us the ability to structure the data collected into meaningful information that ultimately leads to improved data driven decision making which creates better outcomes.

Other key benefits of our combination of existing solutions with digital initiatives include:

Digital Service Delivery

We have developed a bespoke software that is designed to create repeatable and efficient results across all barriers we install.   This has allowed us to tap into new geographies and deliver the same reliable quality assurance and cost saving results for new customers using an end-to-end service delivery workflow.

For example, customers are assured that the quality of delivery in Brazil is the same as the delivery in Norway. Our digital workflow for planning, engineering and execution has been coded so project success factors, risk management, barrier design data, QHSE reporting, and job execution quality assurance are captured and used to deliver operational excellence every time.

Put simply, by collecting the correct data then expertly analysing the data, we can make the right decisions for better outcomes for our customers.

Digital Twin Barrier Assurance

The permanent abandonment of an oil well requires robust and assured techniques to ensure that a permanent barrier is delivered. HydraWell’s PWC® techniques deliver proven reliable results.

However, not every well is the same and each requires a detailed engineering review to create an understanding of the operational risks. We have a library of Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) modelling from over 21,000 hours of Core Processing modelling time, and together with over 400 successful scopes completed, we have an extensive understanding of the operational envelope of our system.

This is used to screen wells that are standard as well as those that are non-standard. When we identify non-standard operations, we provide CFD analysis which enables the well conditions and operating parameters to be thoroughly assessed, ensuring PWC® can deliver the permanent barrier required by the customer.

At HydraWell, we continue to re-think well integrity operations to discover new ways of working that support sustainable development and the energy transition. Our downhole technology innovations and digital interfaces are intrinsic to supporting our customers reduce negative ecological impact as well as deploy a smarter approach to P&A that deliver quality barrier assurance and significant cost and time savings.

These exciting solutions transform service delivery and help enable better customer outcomes. We would be interested in learning more about your downhole challenges and how our technologies and sustainable, digital approach can help.
